BREAKING NEWS: PM to visit Myanmar early next month as Cambodia becomes ASEAN chair

PHNOM PENH: The Prime Minister Hun Sen will pay a visit to Myanmar on 7-8 January 2022 at the invitation of the current ruler of Myanmar, Min Aung Hlaing. This was confirmed by Prime Minister Hun Sen’s assistant, Eang Sophalleth on Tuesday."

After the meeting between Prime Minister Hun Sen and the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Burmese military regime, Wunna Maung Lwin, the Prime Minister’s assistant has reported that the Burmese Foreign Minister has given an invitation letter to Prime Minister Hun Sen to pay a personal visit to Myanmar on 7-8 January 2022. Prime Minister Hun Sen has accepted the invitation confirming to visit personally.

Last week, Prime Minister Hun Sen announced that he was ready to travel to Myanmar in the near future, saying that leaving Myanmar out of ASEAN was a loss of ASEAN's stalemate, which originally had 10 countries, as well as does not respect the ASEAN Charter.

He said, "The ASEAN Charter does not require the expulsion of any member. These are just some of the thoughts of the future ASEAN chair. If the owner of the house itself cannot be organized, what is ASEAN unity, ASEAN middle ground, this is what I said to Japan and Indonesia."

Cambodia will be the rotating chair of ASEAN in 2022, which will have many issues that Cambodia needs to lead to solve both regionally and globally. Cambodia has twice chaired ASEAN, in 2002 and 2012.
